About Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) Counselling
The term Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) originated with Elaine Aron in her book “The Highly Sensitive Person” published in 1996. It has also come to be called Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS).
What It Means To Be A HSP
People who identify as HSP’s were often described as shy growing up. You might’ve been called “too sensitive”. You might’ve been very tuned into the needs and feelings of those around you, feeling drawn to please others or bring calm to a difficult situation. You might’ve been praised for putting aside your own needs and giving more than you would’ve liked to. We can judge ourselves for people pleasing but there is a good reason that it came to be.
You may have been able to read the emotions and energies in a room. If others dismissed what you noticed, you might also have learned to dismiss your own knowing and intuition. You might’ve grown up feeling misunderstood or judged, which can lead to parts of you being judgemental and critical of your own sensitivity. You may have tried to push your sensitivity away and tried to fit in at the expense of your own needs. Parts of you may have picked up the belief that there was something wrong with you. Some of us carry shame, self-criticism or other strong feelings towards our sensitivities.
Now you might find yourself easily overstimulated by sensory input or pressure to do a lot quickly. You might find that being home alone or retreating to your own space for a while feels necessary to come back to balance, especially after being with others.
About Our HSP Counselling Services
IFS therapy is a particularly useful method for providing counselling services for highly sensitive people as it is a quiet, deep inner exploration that follows your own pacing. There is support for big emotions with spaciousness, safety and in your own timing. The process values your insight and can tap into your inner creativity. You can come to understand and appreciate the different parts of you in an embodied way, which feels more robust than only an intellectual knowing.
As an HSP you are likely quite sensitive to your environment. In my office in Nanaimo, I give attention to providing a peaceful, quiet, low stimulating, relaxing environment. Online and remote counselling can also be useful for those not in Nanaimo or those who prefer to be in their own environment.
